The Zone Diet book cover

This author emphasizes portion size and balance. Sears explains in great detail why you need a balance in each meal of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. If your balance is just right, he says, you'll be in the "zone" of proper glycemic index.

Sears explains the medical term glycemic index in some detail. The idea of glycemic index of foods is worth understanding. Many experts today agree that, as we age and our metabolism slows, we can contain weight gain by keeping the glycemic index of our foods on the low side. This means reducing our consumption of high-glycemic foods such as white-flour pasta and french fries, and replacing them with lower-glycemic foods such as whole-grain bread and oatmeal. Unlike Dr. Atkins, though, Sears does not recommend eliminating carbohydrates. Instead, he emphasizes a just-right balance at each meal of proteins, fats, fruits and vegetables, and carbohydrates.

This is a good read for those who have no models for normal balanced eating. If you follow this diet, you can modify it to suit your needs, and still maintain the integrity of the "zone." We at Betterway Press think it's best to take the mathematics with a grain of salt, as they say, and just get the basic idea. It is better to follow your body's sensitivity to a just-right balance than a mathematical formula. This author suggests eliminating sugar, but we don't think that's necessary. Sugar does not have as high a glycemic index as some other carbohydrates, and a little sugar can be very satisfying.
