Gwen Shamblin is a dietician who feels strongly that diets are not about the food, but about our beliefs. Interestingly, Shamblins's views on food and diet are couched in a rational approach to religion. Basically, she shows that diets become a "god" that we bow to, and she exhorts that whenever we bow to a false god, we become led astray, and things do not go well for us. Focusing our lives and love on food will do us only harm.

Even if the religion doesn't interest you, it's worth wading through it in order to glean the gems of wisdom, such as tips for tuning in to your natural hunger and fullness signals. She shows you why you need to be in charge again and that your body does indeed know what it needs, provided you refrain from relying on food to meet your emotional needs. Shamblin makes some important points about marginalizing food and thinness to just a sidebar in our lives. It's as though we need a respectful disregard for the importance of our weight loss while it's happening.

One of the delightful elements of Shamblin's reasoning is the emphasis on God as the creator of delicious foods. Shamblin makes plain that her Almighty did not create milk shakes or veal parmesan to torture us! Instead, He intended for us to eat delicious foods when we're hungry, and stop when we're full. Whatever your beliefs, it is interesting to consider a creator as the provider of rational thinking.

Shamblin's ideas are liberating. Even though there are some minor points on which the two authors part ways, this book is a nice companion to our future book, How to Survive Your Diet by Linda Moran.
